
Dr. Karen Burke, MD, FAAP, obtained her undergraduate degree from Trinity College, Hartford, CT and her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. She has held positions at the New York Hospital and Cornell Medical Center as a practitioner and as Adjunct Faculty. She also held similar roles at the Albert Einstein Medical College and the Montefiore Medical Center.
She has practiced general pediatrics in diverse settings including Federally Qualified Health Center, private group practice, solo practice, hospital-based practice and as the Medical Director of an innovative and successful model of care delivery on mobile medical units in New York City. Her commitment to meeting her community needs extended to North Caolina in 1993.
Most recently, Dr. Burke served eleven years in the Office of the Medical Director at the North Carolina Medical Board, including service as Chief Medical Officer. Through this work, she gained firsthand insight into both the complexity of healthcare regulation and the significant personal and professional impact of medical board investigations, complaints, and disciplinary actions.
Today, as founder of Compass Clinician Support & Consulting, Dr. Burke provides regulatory consulting to clinicians and organizations navigating medical board complaints & investigations, licensing and other regulatory questions, remediation, reentry to practice and performance improvement plans. Awareness of the realities of occupational stress in practice is embedded in this work. Her approach is practical, data-informed, and empathetic. At the heart of this work is a belief that patient protection and best outcomes go hand in hand with supporting best practices in care delivery along with supporting clinician well-being.

Bryant Murphy, MD, MBA, FASA, is a Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and an executive leadership coach. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Psychology with a Neuroscience Concentration from Duke University. He completed Medical School, Anesthesiology Residency, and Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship at Wake Forest University. He also obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from George Washington University in 2012.
Prior to returning to academic practice at UNC, he was a partner in a private practice Anesthesiology Group in southeastern North Carolina, and served on the Board of Trustees for the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Bryant is passionate about teaching, leadership development and advocacy and has served in various state and national leadership roles including President of the North Carolina Society of Anesthesiologists and President of the North Carolina Medical Board. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Medical Society and the Carolina Collaborative Community Care (4C).
