Dr. Karen Burke, MD, FAAP has spent more than three decades caring for children, supporting families, and working alongside physicians and healthcare organizations to strengthen the systems that support patient care. Licensed in North Carolina since 1993, her career has included community-based pediatric practice, academic and nonprofit care delivery, practice leadership, and statewide medical regulation.
Over eleven years at the North Carolina Medical Board—including service as Chief Medical Officer—Dr. Burke developed deep insight into the regulatory process from the inside. She worked closely with physicians, physician assistants, staff, and board members to review complaints, guide professional remediation, and improve regulatory workflows, while also championing greater transparency, fairness, and attention to clinician well-being. Through this work, she became acutely aware of the emotional and professional toll regulatory encounters can take on otherwise dedicated clinicians.
Today, Dr. Burke brings this perspective to her work as founder of Compass Clinician Support & Consulting. She partners with physicians, physician assistants, and healthcare organizations who are seeking clarity, guidance, and support when navigating regulatory questions, professional challenges, or systems-level change. Her approach is thoughtful, practical, and grounded in both experience and empathy—helping clients move forward with confidence, integrity, and purpose.
At the heart of Dr. Burke’s work is a belief that protecting patients and supporting clinicians are not competing goals, but complementary ones. Through education, consultation, and collaborative problem-solving, she helps create pathways that strengthen trust, professionalism, and resilience across the healthcare landscape.
